D.O. and M.D.

Home D.O. and M.D.

What’s the difference between an M.D. and D.O.?

We understand in today’s world of medicine that there are many different types of providers, and it can get confusing for patients to understand the differences. Capital Medical Clinic currently has 16 providers which includes 12 MDs ,2 DOs and 4 PAs.

Many patients ask what the difference is between an MD and DO. One of the myths out there is DOs receive less training which is simply untrue. A Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine and a Medical Doctor are both physicians who attend medical school. MDs attend allopathic medical school and DOs attend Osteopathic Medical Schools. The requirements to apply to M.D. and D.O. programs and the curriculum are largely the same. The D.O. physicians at Capital Medical Clinic attended allopathic residency training as their M.D. partners after they completed their Doctor of Osteopathic Medical School.

There’s no right answer when it comes to choosing between an M.D. or D.O. Licensed MDs and DOs are equally qualified to take care of your medical needs and choosing one over the other is your personal preferences. Ultimately, being comfortable with your provider and having a trusting and collaborative relationship with them is what matters most, not whether they are an MD or DO. We encourage our patients to form long-lasting relationship with their physician and select them based on their attentiveness, personality and willingness to help.
