Biography
Experienced, relationship-based care for adults who want a physician who listens.
Dr. Mark Hernandez is a board-certified internal medicine physician who has cared for adults in the Austin area for over two decades. Before becoming a physician, he spent 10 years working as a registered nurse in the intensive care unit, an experience that continues to shape his patient-centered approach to care. He earned his undergraduate degree in Biology and Philosophy from the University of St. Thomas and his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine. He completed his internal medicine residency and served as Chief Resident in Austin, where he has remained in practice ever since.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Hernandez has practiced across the full spectrum of internal medicine—including primary care, hospital medicine, and complex care management. He has also held multiple leadership roles, including serving as Chief Medical Officer for a large healthcare organization serving the Travis County community. In these roles, he helped design and lead programs focused on improving access, quality, and coordination of care, particularly for patients with chronic and high-acuity conditions.
In 2020, Dr. Hernandez returned to primary care to focus on what he values most: building long-term relationships with his patients and helping them maintain their health, independence, and quality of life. He has extensive experience caring for adults with conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and other chronic illnesses, and is comfortable managing complex medical needs.
Dr. Hernandez believes the best outcomes come from a true partnership between physician and patient. He takes time to listen carefully, understand each patient’s goals and concerns, and ensure they fully understand their care plan. His approach emphasizes prevention, early detection, and thoughtful, evidence-based treatment tailored to the individual.
Patients who choose Dr. Hernandez can expect clear communication, continuity of care, and a physician who is committed to being accessible and responsive when it matters most.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Hernandez enjoys spending time with his wife Patti, their six children, and four granddaughters. He enjoys reading, cooking Cajun food and BBQ, and watching football. His Christian faith is an important part of his life and guides his commitment to serving others with integrity, compassion, and respect.
