About Our Practice

Capital Medical Clinic is a private medical group practice of specialists in Internal Medicine. Internists receive specialized training in the diagnosis and nonsurgical treatment of a broad spectrum of diseases. All physicians have been certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. We value your patronage and our staff will strive to make all of your Clinic experiences valuable and pleasant. Any comments or suggestions you make will receive our careful attention and consideration.

Our History

The Capital Medical Clinic traces its origins to March 1934, when Dr. Charles Milton Darnall began his practice in the Capital National Bank Building (now the Norwood Tower) in downtown Austin. Originally from Llano, Texas, Dr. Darnall completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and began his practice immediately upon completion. His work was later interrupted by his service in World War II. Following the war, he was joined in 1948 by Dr. Horace E. Cromer, also a Mayo Clinic alumnus. In 1957, Dr. Frances M. Pearce joined the practice, followed later by Dr. Grover L. Bynum. Together, these founding physicians established the Capital Medical Clinic — a name chosen in part to honor the Capital National Bank Building where the clinic first operated.

By June 1968, the clinic had grown to seven physicians, all Mayo Clinic-trained, and relocated to the Medical Park Tower on West 38th Street. Capital Medical Clinic played a pivotal role in the creation of Austin’s first medical district; its move from downtown helped catalyze the subsequent development of Seton Medical Center and Shoal Creek Hospital in the same area. After more than five decades at Medical Park Tower, the clinic relocated again in early 2022. As of January 17, 2022, Capital Medical Clinic has made its home in a newly constructed, modern building on West 32nd Street.

As the originator of the group practice concept in Central Texas, Capital Medical Clinic has long attracted exceptionally trained internists. The clinic’s philosophy has always centered on delivering the highest quality Internal Medicine care. With a growing emphasis on preventive medicine over reactive treatment, Capital Medical Clinic has emerged as a leader in wellness care — building on a rich history while embracing a progressive future.
